Miscellany

I'd love to make more lace, dye my own silks, learn to spin and weave, explore pottery, and build my own furniture. Reality check: there's twenty-four hours to the day, I'm a single mother, I work and run a home, and I have other commitments and responsibilities that are more important to me at this time, including a huge list of knitting, cross-stitch, and sewing projects that I'd like to make.

But it's nice to do something different now and then.

Latchhook

Sunflowers Rug

I haven't done latchhook in years, and now I'm on my second project in the last four months. Two big sunflowers on a blue background. Very pretty, but the yarn's quite thin, and I don't think it would wear well if I actually used it.

Finished February 2000

Heart Pillow Top

A blue and red flowered heart on pink background. I did the top but never got around to finishing it as a pillow, and I've since given it away.

Started and finished around 1999-2000

Don't throw latch hook rugs in the washing machine. And don't leave them where cats can claw at them. Got it? This rug, having been suitably abused, now lives in my utilities room.

Soapmolding

Materials: clear glycerin soap, molds, soap dye

Quick and simple gifts. Melt soap, pour into molds, add drop of dye, let harden. (Ideally you're supposed to dye first and then pour, but I was lazy and didn't want to clean up after each batch before starting the next.)

Started and finished December 2006

Cotton loop potholders

The original, ubiquitous kid's craft project. But you know, these things work. They're sturdy, they insulate far better than the average polyester-filled store potholder, and you can run riot with colors.

Necklace

View 1 and View 2

I collected a bunch of beads that felt meaningful to me, strung them with some freshwater pearls and some fossil beads I had on hand, and made this necklace. I suppose it's my UU rosary.

Finished around 1995
